Update Mesh Terrain Greece FS9

This is a mesh terrain enhancement covering all of Greece. There has been extensive work done so as to correct wrong land formations and wrong airport locations as set by Microsoft. The outcome is a combination of terrain, coastlines and airports all being at the correct geographic locations with an accuracy down to 70x70 m squares.

The terrain is based on SRTM Data (3 arcsec, 90m) and sampled to LOD9 resolution (76m) resulting in 70 x 70 meters accuracy.

Version 3 includes "cleaner" elevation detail as seen in images below giving a better final result and reduced file size & quantity from the original.

These are some of the actions that were performed in the Base Scenery :

* Panos, "the sculptor" as we lately call him, has changed airport surrounding mesh terrain to be even closer to reality from the auto extracted SRTM terrain in locations like LGSM, LGKC, LGKJ, LGEL, LGPA, LGLE, LG0D and others. For this, real pictures were used as it was the only valid reference. These were changes that can never be made by a mesh terrain designer unless he/she knows the area well and therefore you will not find them in any other mesh terrain available in the net.
* After airports were relocated it was found that the actual airport elevation was a problem. Their real counterparts have sloping terrain and since MSFS does not support that we ended up having high elevated terrain on short finals from one side of the airports. This necessitated for the airport polygon (VTP) elevation to be adjusted in order to cooperate properly with the new detailed mesh terrain (LGEL, LGTT, LGPA and others)
* Few coastal airports were affected by simplified coastline design by MS. More detailed coastlines have been produced wherever this was important for the nearby airport. Also improved or new water areas were created where ncessary like the Korinthos canal (near GX07 Korinthos airstrip) or LGMR Marathon, the old Athens GA airfield which has now become an Olympic Games rowing race reservoir
* There were some texture bleed through cases (sea water in land) in the default MS scenery which were corrected (LGMT, LGRP and others)

The mesh terrain is designed so as to fully cooperate with the base scenery and the new locations of the airports in there. Unless you use the HSP base scenery package you will have problems in certain airports surrounded by raising terrain.

IMPORTANT: Do not forget that unless you set TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=21 in the [TERRAIN] section of your FS9.CFG you will not get the desired results as seen in the preview screenshots.

The "Base Scenery" is a set of changes & enhancements to airports and surroundings with the intent of a) correcting wrong entries by MS in respect to geographic locations airports and their objects and b) enhancing visually airports and places that were left very simple by default scenery. The changes and improvements were made by adding "light" objects so as to minimize impact on PC performance. This scenery does not incorporate detailed custom objects per airport but rather a generic set of objects used by HST for scenery enhancement. A set of representative screenshots below indicates only a fragment of the work that has been done.

Enhancement and corrective work has been done in 12 main airports, 30 secondary airports, 10 airfields & airstrips and over 60 heliports all over Greece.

The changes will not be represented to their full extent if you do not use the mesh terrain produced by Panos Georgotas

These are some of the actions that were performed in the Base Scenery :

* Airports & their navaids moved to the correct (DAFIF) location
* Surrounding area of moved airports "masked" and new terrain textures applied (Landclass)
* Ground objects (buildings, taxisigns etc.) moved to new locations
* New MS default library Ground objects added that did not exist before (Terminals, Towers, taxisigns etc.)
* New GMax generic HSP library objects added (Hangars, Fences, Shelters, houses, churches, windmills etc.)
* Corrected Airport flat surfaces ; taxiway, parking position, lighting, nav. data, textures etc. (AFCAD)
* Changed (relocated) airport elevations wherever these interfered with new mesh terrain (VTP editing) [part of the mesh terrain work]
* Changed airport surrounding mesh terrain to be even closer then auto extracted SRTM terrain. (LGSM, LGKC, LGKJ, LGEL, LGPA, LGLE, LG0D) [part of the mesh terrain work]
* Added new taxiways and aprons there where MS had only one runway and one tower (random location)

Custom detailed major airports' scenery that will follow in the future will go above the basic enhancements of the Base Scenery.

All of the above work has been done with three primary goals :

1. Moving of the airports was done for accurate navigation with modern enhanced navigation systems based on AIRAC data cycles issued by DAFIF. More information as to why most Greek airports were in wrong location can be found in this forum post.
2. Adding default MS and custom HSP generic GMax designed objects was done to increase the sense of "scale" in the airports (trees, buildings, fences, taxisigns) so that pilots get a stronger feeling of their movement in the virtual space. At the same time PC performance remains almost intact since these objects containd very few custom textures, they are of new generation graphics and come from default FS libraries.
3. Setting the airports at the right location did set the starting point for later custom scenery per airport to follow at the correct location and users of all versions in multiplay sessions to appear in same locations. This moving operation created a great workload for HST that is not visible from the average flightsimmer. We are now satisfied though, that pilots will use the FS as realistically as possible in terms of geographic locations and the simulation experience of flying around real Hellas terrain which in many cases has its peciliarities.

Usage Information
Update 22 February 2007, Version 2 fixes all problems from the past.
- If you install custom airport sceneries released before February 2007 make sure you do not overwrite new HSP BASE V2 scenery files. Refer to V2 Base scenery documentation for this.

22 Feb. 2007 LEROS FIX : There appears to be a windsock inside Leros LGLE runway. Download this file and follow instructions on the fix.
